My biggest struggle
While the doctor was delivering me, he pulled on my shoulder and dislocated it, changing my life forever. When my mom noticed that my arm wasn't hanging right, she told the doctor and he said it was dislocated, but it would heal on it's own in a few days because I was so young. Days passed and my arm wasn't healing. My mom then took me to the hospital and they said that I was going to need surgery to relocate my shoulder. My mom was told that since I was only a few weeks old that there was nothing they could do at the time because I didn't have enough muscle to perform any surgery. Months went by and I was starting to crawl. Since my arm was still dislocated I was unable to use both arms. I taught myself how to crawl with only one arm. As time went by I faced more challenges that I would have to overcome by learning an alternative way to achieve the everyday obstacles in life that came my way.
At two years, old the doctors decided that I had enough muscle to perform the surgery. I would then have to wear a half body cast that would hold my shoulder in place for eight weeks. Every day in that cast was a struggle, not only for me but for my mom who was always with me, caring for me. The things I could do at the time were so limited, but my mom never let me give up. Every time I would fail at something; she would look at me and tell me that I was able to do anything I wanted if I put my mind to it. If I ever felt like I couldn't do something, my mom would tell me to never give up ,and that not trying was not an option because I could do it if I tried hard enough. This completely changed my way of viewing the world. I never realized how much the attitude you have towards something affected the result you get in the end.
After removing the cast the doctors soon found that my shoulder was unable to heal correctly, because the muscle in my arm had already formed the wrong way so the surgery was unsuccessful. My mom and I were informed that there was nothing they could do to fix it. The outcome of this surgery would change my life forever. I was now determined to never let anything get in the way of me achieving my goals, and I was never going to let the idea of failing get in my way of succeeding, because I would always overcome the challenges that came my way.
With the way my arm is now, it is still a struggle to do some things and will continue to be for the rest of my life. My family helped me a lot and changed my way of viewing things by telling me to never give up. Because of them never letting me give up, I know I can do almost anything if I keep trying and never let the thought of failing keep me from succeeding.
